A new port at Chiang Saen, the dwindling number of Giant Catfish and fishermen changing into farmers were just some of the issues investigated during the most recent IMMF training course. Television journalists spent four weeks travelling throughout Northern Thailand to learn about the ever-changing landscape of the Mekong River Valley in Thailand. Lead by professional videojournalists Jay Mowat from Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and Sam Kalayanee of ImagesAsia, the group explored challenges facing the Mekong and the people who live along its banks.

After meeting with environmental groups, the Mekong River Commission, and the Asian Development Bank, journalists headed north to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai Provinces. Weeks were spent interviewing and filming on location in Chiang Saen, Chiang Khong and the surrounding villages. Three short documentaries probing the changes forced upon the river and its people by urbanisation, international trade and a changing environment resulted from the research and training.
